Federation Vox is our members' e-newsletter, and serves to provide timely news on literary events, contest deadlines, award nominations, funding opportunties and articles of interest to BC's writing community. Federation Board Email notices for regional representation positions and nominations have been sent to all members in good standing in each of our six regions: Lower Mainland, Islands, Central, Fraser Valley, North and South East. Chosen candidates will be officially appointed to our board at this year's AGM. The executive board has elected long-time Fraser Valley regional rep, Sylvia Taylor, to stand as candidate for the president's position. Interim treasurer Doug Welbanks will be standing as candidate for the treasurer's position. Vice President Joy Huebert will continue her two-year term while Board secretary Andrea Lowe will be stepping down in 2008. Fed members interested in standing as candidates for any of our executive board positions are welcome to contact the Fed office at 604-683-2057 for more information.
AGM 2008 A reminder that this year's Federation of BC Writers' Annual General Meeting and Conference will take place May 9 - 10 at the Listel Hotel, 1300 Robson Street, Vancouver. The AGM, Reception and Federation anthology launch will begin at 6:30 pm. on Friday, May 9, in the Sculpture Gallery Room. Seating at the AGM & Reception is limited and refreshments need pre-arranging so AGM e-vites with a request for RSVPS will be sent out next week. Admission to the AGM, Reception and Book Launch of Imagining BC: Land, Memory & Place is free to FBCW members.
Two workshops are scheduled (at the same venue) on Saturday, May 10. We are pleased to offer our members "A First Date with Screenwriting" led by author and screenwriter Michele Adams and "The Art of the Sentence" presented by author and Geist magazine editor Stephen Osborne. Congratulations to Howie White Fed member Howie White, publisher of Harbour Publishing, was awarded Canada's highest civilian honour, the Order of Canada, on Friday, April 11. White was bestowed the honour by Michäelle Jean, the Governor General of Canada, at Rideau Hall in Ottawa in recognition of his 30-year contribution to the growth of book publishing on Canada’s West Coast. Other Canadian writers receiving the Order included Donat Lacroix, Alistair MacLeod, Leon Rooke, Charlotte Gray and Chrystine Brouillet.

BC Book & Magazine Week Events BC Book & Magazine Week kicks off with the BC Book Prize Soirée taking place on Saturday, April 19 at 7 pm at the Metropolitan Hotel, 645 Howe Street, Vancouver. With music by Ron Johnston, food by Diva at the Met, a silent auction and, of course, many shortlisted authors in attendance, this free public event at the Metropolitan Hotel is a great opportunity for those in the publishing and writing community to mix and mingle with finalists and fans alike. Could Vancouver become a UNESCO World City of Literature? A movement is underway to have Vancouver named a UNESCO City of Literature, joining the City of Edinburgh, which received the first-ever UN designation in 2004. Alma Lee, the founding artistic director of the Vancouver International Writers & Readers Festival, and Margaret Reynolds, executive director of the Association of Book Publishers of British Columbia, will chair a public consultation on April 23 that will explore the opportunities associated with becoming a UNESCO World City of Literature. Berton House Writers’ RetreatThe Writers’ Trust of Canada is now accepting applications for the position of writer-in-residence at the Berton House Writers’ Retreat in Dawson City, Yukon. There are four positions available between July 1, 2009 and June 30, 2010. Each position is for a three-month period. The residency provides a unique opportunity for Canadian writers to devote a significant time to their writing and to advancing their writing careers. A monthly honorarium is provided and housing and transportation costs are covered. Writers are required to perform a public reading in Dawson City and Whitehorse and are encouraged to interact with the local community. Remuneration: $6,000 honorarium for a three-month term.
